Protection versus throughput
A contract packer running bottles at line speed should prefer an integrated seal-and-cap process over a manually applied security bag. Manual bags can offer better custody evidence for clinical trial kits, but they introduce operator handling, seal inspection and reconciliation requirements.

Match barrier to the medicine
Standard APET blister film may be acceptable where the dosage form has modest barrier needs and the stability programme supports it. It isn't a universal replacement for cold-form foil. Moisture-sensitive, oxygen-sensitive or light-sensitive products may need a more protective structure, and the decision belongs in the approved pack specification rather than a sustainability presentation.
Virgin PVC can be cost-effective and familiar to converters, but it may not align with every corporate material policy. PETG and mono-material options can support different recyclability objectives, yet their forming behaviour, sealing window and barrier performance must be demonstrated on the production line.
Challenge unsupported recycled claims
Ask for migration information, extractables and leachables assessment, supplier change-control commitments and DPML documentation where relevant. Ask for records, not assurances
Require the supplier to show validation protocols, deviation reports, change-control procedures and retest frequency. Score volume breaks realistically
Unit pricing can change at meaningful volume breaks around 250k, 1m and 5m packs. Treat those thresholds as planning points, not guaranteed market statistics. Ask every supplier to quote the same construction at each relevant volume, with tooling, plates, origination, print inspection and freight shown separately.
Smaller runs can become uneconomic when fixed tooling and print costs are spread across fewer packs. Keep the required tamper-evident feature, then compare a stock format, simpler overprint or validated alternative construction. A lower unit price is useful only if the format still meets the specification and production controls.
Use a disciplined shortlist
Send the same technical RFQ to four suppliers. Score the five criteria above, then audit the top two before commitment. Reject any supplier that cannot evidence migration testing, disclose outsourced print, discuss recycled options or explain a lead time beyond four weeks.
Capacity means equipment and output suited to your format, not a broad claim about factory size. Ask for contingency arrangements, approved manufacturing sites and notification procedures if the line, resin or adhesive changes. Matching the Right Format to Your Product
The product and handover point should determine the format.

Injectables and combination packs should use tamper-evident tape over the carton where the outer pack needs an immediate opening signal, with optional 2D-coded serialisation where your operational or customer specification calls for it. Don't treat the code as a substitute for physical evidence.
Controlled drugs need a dedicated track-and-trace bag and a witness seal. A generic mailing bag or an ordinary carton label is not an adequate substitute for a documented custody process.
Before you sign the PO, take three actions:
