Films win when you need flexible coverage, fast packing and low material mass. Corrugated wins when stacking strength, print communication and straightforward fibre recovery matter more. Practical rule: Specify the failure you're preventing before you specify the material. A cheaper pack that leaks, collapses or shifts on a pallet isn't cheaper.

Choosing the Right Option for Product, Compliance and Cost

Packaging selection works best when you treat four priorities as competing lenses: product protection, regulatory fit, landed cost and sustainability. No format wins every lens. Your job is to make the trade-off visible and defensible.

A 25 kg powder chemical, for example, needs moisture control, seal reliability and transit strength. Cutting Costs Without Cutting Protection

Packaging ROI rarely comes from the lowest quoted unit price. It comes from controlling the total cost of protection, including product damage, returns, line stoppages, storage, freight, waste handling and compliance exposure.

Start with the failure history. If one fragile SKU generates repeated damage, a small film-gauge saving won't compensate for claims, rework and customer disruption. Audit the pack's weak point first, whether that's a seal, corner, puncture zone, pallet movement or static charge.

Consider a 10-tonne annual polythene order. A 12-micron downgauge combined with 30% PCR content could reduce raw material use and EPR exposure where the application passes its line and protection trials. The correct procurement move isn't to bank the entire saving immediately. Reinvest part of it in an anti-static liner upgrade for the problematic line, then measure whether the revised pack removes the original failure.

That approach is more credible than promising savings from a thinner bag before testing. It also keeps sustainability subordinate to performance, which is exactly where it belongs in industrial packaging.
